The motor is the most important component of any electric blind system. It is what you will hear (or not hear) every morning when you open the blinds, and it is what will determine whether the system is still working reliably in ten years’ time. Choosing correctly from the outset saves both money and frustration.
Types of motor: what is available?
Tubular motors
The most common type for roller blinds, solar screens, and exterior blinds. The motor is housed inside the winding tube and is virtually invisible once installed.

The controller sends commands; the motor has no way to confirm its position. Works fine with a standalone remote but offers limited integration with home automation platforms.
Bidirectional radio
The motor sends its current position back to the controller. This enables:

Noise: what to expect
Motor noise is measured in decibels (dB). The difference between a budget motor and a quality one is significant in practice:
- Entry-level motors: 45–55 dB — clearly audible in a quiet room
- Mid-range motors: 35–45 dB — noticeable but not intrusive
- High-end motors: below 35 dB — barely perceptible
In bedrooms and home offices, noise matters. Do not rely on the manufacturer’s stated dB figures alone — ask for references or visit a showroom where you can hear the motor running.
What to avoid
- Unknown brands with no European stock of spare parts. When the motor fails after three years, you will not be able to source a replacement part and will end up replacing the entire unit.
- Undersized motors. A motor running at or near its maximum torque constantly will overheat and wear out far sooner than rated.
- Unidirectional motors in a smart home context. They work, but poorly — automation becomes unreliable and troubleshooting is difficult.
